Many people want to be great
in the eyes of Allah
but this is impossible.
The powerful are as ants at His feet.
The holy are like grave clothes,
fetid and falling away.
You cannot gain Allah’s esteem
by lording power over great cities
or by your righteousness,
no matter how celebrated or by whom.
Real love is not impressed by greatness
but by humility
and sincerity.
If you want Allah’s esteem
you must throw yourself at His feet,
admit your darkest secret
howl the awful truth of your soul before His presence
and surrender every hope of greatness.

The best we can hope for is to be embraced
